How to Make Change Work for your Benefit

Posted On Feb 28, 2022 |

Change is the one constant in the universe. We often resist it but the key is to make it work for you instead.

Change is the one constant in the universe. Neither us, nor the planet, even the sun won’t last forever.

But change can be stressful. In fact, various life events are classified by psychologists based on the severity of the stress felt by the individual. A death in the family and divorce are rated at the top of the scale, being the most stressful and even psychologically altering.

But even the most stressful changes can provide benefits and new opportunities.

Your ability to deal with change can be a good measure for predicting your success.

Those that handle change poorly fight change and strive to protect the status quo. They avoid change and feel at the effect of it. Ultimately, no change equals no progress.

Changes in employment, living location, and relationships can be among the most stressful changes, but can also provide the greatest opportunities for positive life advancements.

While change is stressful, it can deliver numerous benefits - if you choose to see them:

  1. Without change, life would be boring.

No matter how great your life might be, it can still become boring. You may find that you make a significant change and after some time, you feel like you’re bored and require something new again. Have you ever been on your dream vacation and found yourself excited about going home by the end of your time there? Even the most amazing experiences may lead to changing them eventually, the charm and excitement can start to wear off after awhile.

Change keeps things fresh.

Imagine living the same day over and over again. What would be the point?

2. Change can bring improvements.

Changes in diet can lead to enhancements of health and appearance. A relationship change can bring new levels of happiness and meaning to life. A change of careers can provide new growth opportunities and possible salary growth.

If you feel stuck where you currently are, creating change is the quickest way to enhance your life.

    3. Change builds resilience.

Numerous studies have shown that the stress of change, within limits, increases the ability of nearly any organism to thrive. Too much change can be too stressful. Too little change leads to a loss of vitality and stagnancy.

Some degree of change is required to be at your best, to grow, evolve - and handle future challenges with more ease.

      4.Change provides opportunities.

When your circumstances and environment change, the opportunities available to you also change.

Every change brings new possibilities. One of them might be perfect for you, who knows?

It’s impossible to know what lies ahead if you don’t take the initiative to create the opportunities you want.

Change isn’t easy, but it’s a necessary part of life. Without any changes, you, your life and the planet would become a pretty boring place!

So with these benefits, how can you start to make change work for you?

        Learn from the change (Awareness)
Learn to be aware of what is happening around you and within you at every moment. When you are, you’re able to look at change objectively and to assess the reality of the situation. You’ll be able to assess what is really happening (or happened) vs what you think is happening (happened). When we know “what is”, it enables us to take the lessons from the change and be more accepting or open to possibilities.

        • How did you describe what happened?

        • How would you describe it now?

        • What actually happened?

        • What opportunities did you miss by interpreting change from a less aware perspective?

        • What learning

        • How can you use this information to show up more engaged in a future situation?

Acceptance that change is inevitable. (Acceptance)

Change brings new options and the ability to adapt is underrated. Acceptance is when you use the opportunity to find a new perspective. When you’re unable to accept that change is inevitable, you’ll constantly fight what is happening, live in the past and try to force a different outcome. Without acceptance, you’ll be at the effect of the outcomes and unlikely to shift your mood & energy until you see the result you were expecting.

        • Find healthy ways to cope with uncertainty

        • Focus on what is happening not what you want to happen

        • Learn to let go of expectations and develop more faith

        • Recognise the that life is an endless series of events & experiences that us us learn and grow

Be flexible and let go of what “should be” (Trusting the Process)

Being able to let go of expectations and have faith in the process, means that you know you’re doing the best you can right now. Getting out of your own way and taking one step at a time, you are gaining more perspective of where you are and develop hope for the future.

        • How would being more flexible & letting go change your reaction to change?

        • What does having “more faith” look like in this situation?

        • What would be different if you knew the this experience serves a purpose for you?

Keep your mind open to new opportunities (Fearlessness)
Staying too focused on the negative will make it harder to see the positive. When we look for the opportunities, it’s possible that change can change your life for the better. Often people don’t readily accept change because it conflicts with what they currently believe about life, who they are and what they believe they should be experiencing. You’ll continually look for proof of why things should stay the way they are, and then you won’t move forward.

        • How open are you to new opportunities?

        • How does the way in which you evaluate change, help or hinder you?

        • What might get in the way of exploring new opportunities, and what will you do if this happens?

Breathe and find inner peace (Presence in the Moment)
It’s easy to feel overwhelmed in the face of change, but excessive stress (and choosing to stay in this state) makes the situation even worse. You’re not at your best when overstressed, so find ways to shift and release your energy. Adopting more presence and calm can do wonders in finding peace amongst the chaos.

        • How does taking a moment to pause, breathe and center ,myself affect how I show up daily?

        • What’s preventing me from being more present in the moment?

        • How will I know it’s time to take a breath and find more peace by being still?

Welcome change into your life. It provides new opportunities, builds resilience, and keeps life interesting.

Without change, life would become dull and tedious. Embrace change and keep your eyes open for new ways to enhance your life.

It’s natural to dread change, but change is the only constant in life. Those that deal with change effectively enjoy more success, freedom and peace.
